Advanced Nuclear Energy Technologies Act
H.R. 3358
Sponsor:
- Rep. Clay Higgins (R-La.)
Introduced:
- 6/19/19
Status:
- A version of H.R.3358 and S.1457 were incorporated in the Nuclear Energy Leadership Act (NELA) (S.903, H.R.3306), which was enacted in the Energy Act of 2020
WHAT IT DOES
It amends the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to direct the Secretary of Energy to carry out demonstration projects relating to advanced nuclear reactor technologies to support domestic energy needs, and for other purposes.
WHY WE LIKE IT
This bill get to the heart of ClearPath’s efforts to modernize the Department of Energy by addressing a major lapse in federal energy innovation: the lack of real and ambitious goals for applied research.
It would spur public-private partnerships that will help pave the way for the commercialization of the next generation of nuclear power facilities which produce less waste, have state-of-the-art safety standards and are smaller, cheaper, and quicker to build.
Nuclear has long been the nation’s leading clean base load source of power but faces challenges in the development and use of small modular reactors and other technologies that produce less waste and are more economically viable to manufacture.
