WHAT IT DOES

Directs and authorizes the Energy secretary to construct a versatile neutron source user facility via funding allocated from the Department of Energy’s Office of Nuclear Energy.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Investing in DOE’s research user facility capabilities is important to deploying the next generation of U.S. nuclear power. Versatile fast neutron source is a crucial R&D tool that the private sector needs, and is unable to provide on its own, to test state-of-the-art designs. This open-access user facility will facilitate academic and proprietary research in the U.S. Currently, R&D this asset would facilitate is only available for civilian research in Russia.
