WHAT THEY DO

  • Directs the Secretary of Energy to establish specific goals to align federal, lab and private-sector efforts and demonstrate multiple advanced nuclear reactors by the mid 2020’s;
  • Develops a 10-year strategic plan that supports advanced nuclear goals;
  • Provides a sufficient interim supply of advanced nuclear fuel for many advanced nuclear designs until the commercial sector is prepared;
  • Allows federal power purchase agreements to contract for up to 40 years in duration;
  • Creates a pilot program for the federal government to purchase power from reactors to get the first models planned and financed and finally,
  • Allocates dollars towards scholarships that will encourage a strong nuclear workforce.

WHY WE LIKE THEM

Future nuclear reactors will need to be smaller, cheaper, flexible and more widely deployed. Modernizing our nuclear sector is vital to ensuring that our electric grid has plenty of zero-carbon flexible power. The Nuclear Energy Leadership Act takes necessary action to achieve these goals.
