WHAT IT DOES
The Launching Energy Advancement and Development through Innovations in Natural Gas (LEADING Act) directs the Department of Energy to conduct critical carbon capture research and development for natural gas power plant applications. Focus areas include natural gas combined cycle, combined heat and power and other types of power plant applications.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Due to the recent windfall of low-cost natural gas, the United States now produces more electricity from natural gas power plants than any other power plant type. As our electricity mix and markets have changed, so must the Department of Energy’s research areas. In addition to providing more resources for natural gas carbon capture research, the bill also encourages active public-private partnerships and establishes ambitious proof-of-concept project goals.
SPECIFICS
- Provides the Department of Energy dedicated resources for natural gas carbon capture R&D
- Sets a goal of demonstrating natural gas carbon capture technologies at the pilot or demonstration scale
- Directs the Secretary to regularly report on advances made by the program and status of natural gas carbon capture technology
