WHAT IT IS

Extends the authorization of the Advance Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) at the Department of Energy (DOE) to 2024.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Extending and growing the ARPA-E program at the DOE ensures a continued focus on high-potential, high-impact energy technologies that can be game changers within the energy sector. Passage would ensure that the office continues to be able to fill the financing and knowledge gaps needed for nascent technologies to take steps towards full development, private financing, commercialization, and deployment.

SPECIFICS

  • Authorizes the program through 2024
  • Grows the authorized budget to $750,000,000 by 2024
  • Focusing project on funding on energy technologies that:
    • Reduce imports of energy from foreign sources
    • Reduce energy-related emissions, including greenhouse gases;
    • Improve the energy efficiency of all economic sectors;
    • Provide transformative solutions to improve the management, clean-up, and disposal of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel; and,
    • Improve the resilience, reliability, and security of infrastructure to produce, deliver, and store energy
  • Ensures ARPA-E does not provide finances to projects that are duplicative of other DOE programs and national labs
