WHAT IT DOES

The bill eliminates bureaucratic restrictions on liquified natural gas exports.

WHY WE LIKE IT

The United States is the top producer of natural gas. The international market for liquified natural gas is expected to grow rapidly, particularly in Europe and Asia. Considering natural gas reduced emissions in the US power sector by about a third from 2005 to 2017, it can also help reduce emissions abroad by displacing more carbon-intensive fuels. The current permitting process for LNG exports is unnecessarily bureaucratic, which impairs investor certainty and limits taking full advantage of America’s wealth of natural gas supplies.

SPECIFICS

      • Eliminates the prohibitions on the exportation and importation of natural gas
      • Acknowledges that natural gas could help lower global emissions of carbon dioxide by displacing other high emissions sources
      • Maintains the President’s powers to limit exports in special cases
      • Directs the Secretary of Energy to submit reports to Congress detailing actions to support the exportation of natural gas
      • Identify existing regulations that inhibit the growth of the natural gas export market
