Washington, DC – Tuesday, June 18, 2024 – The Senate passed the Accelerating Deployment of Versatile, Advanced Nuclear for Clean Energy (ADVANCE) Act of 2024 this afternoon by a vote of 88-2. It will now head to the President for signature into law. This legislation will modernize the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and strengthen the U.S. nuclear energy industry by providing streamlined and predictable regulation.
This bill is a bipartisan agreement between the ADVANCE Act
S. 1111 and the Atomic Energy Advancement Act (AEAA)
H.R. 6544. The ADVANCE Act was led by
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV) and Tom Carper (D-DE) along with an additional bipartisan group of Senators. AEAA was led by
Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA), Jeff Duncan (R-SC) and Diana DeGette (D-CO).
This bipartisan, bicameral legislation addresses a wide range of issues the nuclear industry currently faces, including fuel sourcing, NRC licensing and advanced technology development. The legislation aims to position the United States as the global leader in advanced nuclear development, which is not only an important economic advantage but also makes progress towards reducing emissions.
“The United States is on the verge of a nuclear liftoff with exciting new technologies moving towards construction,” said
Jeremy Harrell, Chief Executive Officer, ClearPath Action. “There are dozens of advanced reactor designs expected to go through the NRC licensing process by the end of this decade, and they need a modern approach and bipartisan legislation to keep up with our country’s energy needs. This bipartisan, bicameral legislation will unlock America’s clean energy potential.”
ClearPath Action endorsed both the
ADVANCE Act and the
Atomic Energy Advancement Act.
